The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a thread holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him publicly stated that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for financial irregularities. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or collapsing.
The Youngster's Surprising Presence
One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.
He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Uncovering His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
