Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Release
But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given physical folders of materials that included no previously unseen information.
