Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
